The last week before a move is where good planning pays off. Work through these tasks a few at a time and moving day becomes just another item on the list — not a scramble.
7 days out: confirm and communicate
Call your movers to confirm the date, arrival window, and address details. This is also the time to reserve an elevator or loading dock if you live in a building, and to let neighbors know a truck will need curb space.
5 days out: run down the essentials
- Start eating what’s in the fridge and freezer so there’s less to toss.
- Set aside a “first night” box: chargers, medications, a change of clothes, toiletries, and basic tools.
- Label boxes by room, not just contents — it makes unloading twice as fast.
3 days out: handle the services
Transfer or cancel utilities, update your address with the post office, and take a photo of any electronics setup before you unplug it so reassembly is painless.
1 day out: the final pass
Charge your phone, withdraw a little cash for tips, and do a walk-through of every closet, cabinet, and drawer. Keep valuables and documents with you rather than on the truck.
A calm move is really just a series of small, early decisions. Tackle a little each day and the last morning feels surprisingly quiet.
